Due to a small training mishap at the the cursed Chinese springs of Jusenkyo, Ranma Saotome now becomes a girl whenever he is splashed with cold water. The effect is reversible with hot water, but it does tend to be a rather inconvenient problem. However, the curse turns out to be the least of his troubles. Ranma soon discovers that he was betrothed in infancy to the daughter of his father's life-long friend, betrothed to another girl at the age of five in exchange for an okonomiyaki cart, and eventually becomes engaged by Amazon tribal law to another young woman he inadvertently bested in combat. In addition, he is pursued by a martial artist gymnast when in his true form, and coveted by the gymnast's brother when in girl-form. This is not to mention all of the other various hopefuls he's encountered. It's no wonder that Ranma tends to maintain an I-don't-care attitude, trying to stay cool, aloof and above it all. Deep down inside, however, Ranma really doesn't want to hurt anyone, which is why he has allowed the fiasco to continue as long as it has.
