Though initially a loner who seems to keep the rest of the Digi-Destined at arm's length, Yamato's indifferent exterior actually hides a sensitive and caring young man who is often more concerned over the safety and emotions of the group - particularly those of his younger brother Takeru - then he is in whether or not they fulfill their mission.  This point of view usually leads to altercations with Taichi over their course of action, but his more level-headed thinking is an important balance to Tai's exuberance.  Because of the distance he tries to place between himself and others, however, 'Matt' questions why he was granted the Crest of Friendship, but eventually he grows to realize that dedication and concern for his friends, which often comes at the expense on his own regard, makes him more than worthy to hold this important and cohesive Crest.
